Activities To Enjoy During the Garden Island Summer!
There are many choices when it comes to deciding how to spend you days during a Kauai vacation. Here are some fun activities to enjoy that will make for a memorable stay on the Garden Island.
Take a Boat Tour On the Na Pali Coast
Kauai is a relatively small island so no matter where you are staying you can still choose a boat tour leaving from your side of the island. The most stunning scenery can be found along the Na Pali Coast, a rugged and remote stretch of shoreline along the western shore. While small to medium-sized boats tour the Na Pali from Hanalei Bay on the north shore, you can take larger boats from the south and west sides.
A highlight of a Na Pali boat tour is seeing spinner dolphins riding in the bow wave of the boat, a frequent occurrence. Some tours stop for snorkeling which is a memorable experience along this remarkably scenic coastline. During the winter months humpback whales are often seen breaching above the water and landing with a thunderous splash!
Your choices of watercraft range from large sailing vessels to small rigid-hull rafts. The smaller boats are able to explore some of the coastal caves, which can be quite a thrill. Another option is to enjoy a sunset cruise along the south shore or a sail across Hanalei Bay.
Poipu Beach and Resort
A visit to Poipu Beach is a great addition to any Kauai vacation itinerary. Relax on the beach, go snorkeling, or even try your hand at a variety of watersports from surfing or bodyboarding to stand up paddle boarding. After some fun in the sun, explore the many shopping and dining opportunities of the resort’s luxurious hotels.
Visit A Farmer’s Market
Sample some local produce at one of the many weekly Farmer’s Markets on all sides of the island. Many exotic and delicious fruits can be found from lychee, rambutan and mango to papaya and star fruit.
Visit Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park
From Waimea Town on Kauai’s west side you can drive up the hill along the ridge of Waimea Canyon and enjoy spectacular views of what Mark Twain called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” Several viewing points along the way are definitely worth stopping at to gaze into the cavernous red-rock gorge.
When you get to the top you will be at Kokee State Park which has about 40-miles of hiking trails, some leading down into the canyon, some along the coastal bluffs and others into the renowned Alakai Swamp area where you may see rare native forest birds amidst the jungle-like overgrowth.
Trails along the bluff, such as the Awaawapuhi Trail, provide unforgettable vistas over the Na Pali coastline and the blue Pacific beyond. Also worth visiting is the Kokee Natural History Museum where you can learn more about the flora and fauna of this area, and catch a bite to eat at the nearby restaurant.
