How did you get into the real estate business?
On holiday on Kauai for the umpteeumpth time I decided that life was for a good time and not or long time and I thought, wouldn’t it be great to have an office in Hanalei and wear slippers and board shorts every day. What could I do – my background was in software sales, I was always a “house” person and I really enjoy taking care of others… So here I am today in board shorts and slippers in my office at Coldwell Banker Bali Hai Realty in Hanalei where I have become one of the most accomplished agents on Kauai and was recently recognized by Hawaii Business Magazine as one of the Top 100 Residential REALTORS® in the State of Hawaii and was also recognized by the Kauai Board of Realtors as “REALTOR® of the Year.”
What geographic area do you serve or specialize in?
I focus exclusively on the Island of Kauai and represent buyers and sellers island-wide. I primarily represent Kama’aina (long-time residents) and mainland-based second-home buyers and sellers.
What characteristics or practices set you apart from other agents in the real estate field?
My professional sales and technology background. I worked in corporate America for over 15 years for IBM and other technology companies and received a great deal of training in all of the various aspects of sales. I sit on the Board of Directors for the software company that runs the MLS in Kauai and Hawaii so that gives me a great deal of exposure to the MLS industry, NAR policies, syndication and all of the challenges that MLS’s face today. I’m a great believer in sharpening the saw, so I attend a host of conferences and seminars, like Inman Real Estate Connect and Agent Reboot. I’m also from a large family and growing up in a chaotic, competitive, circus-like atmosphere with lots of moving parts is a great preparation for dealing with all of the challenges present every day in your real estate practice.
How do you market the homes that you list?
By investing a great deal of time, energy and especially money into the marketing of the properties. I utilize the Kauai-based print media—you would be surprised as to how many people arrive on Kauai with no intent or thought of purchasing property and leave a week later with a contract in hand. Print media and brochure boxes attached to signs still work well here. I invest in a variety of web marketing sites, and give each listing its own website. Professional photography, professionally produced video and aerial photographs are differentiators. Syndication of the listings at over 50 of the top real estate related websites and our brokerage. Leveraging the REALTOR® network along with my sphere of influence.
Are you involved in any events or charities?
I support the Salvation Army Kokua Soup Kitchen and have helped organize the various Brokerages on Kauai and we take turns volunteering to cook, serve and clean on a regular basis. I support the Kauai Food Bank, Kauai United Way and a number of other local organizations. I am from a large family and we have created an annual scholarship at the high school we all attended.
Is there anything you want to do this year that you haven’t yet done in your business?
Expand my presence in the social media sphere. There are so many channels where potential clients search for property and REALTOR® representation—it’s a fulltime job just trying keeping up with it all.
