Beaches, Shopping and Dining in “Sunny Poipu”

Kauai’s south shore is a world-class vacation destination with great beaches, boutique shopping, gourmet dining, championship golf courses and luxury resorts. Poipu Beach has been named on multiple “Best Beaches” lists including being named as America’s Best Beach by the Travel Channel. When it comes to vacation destinations few places can match Poipu.

As you enter or leave Poipu, most drive through this beautiful tunnel of trees.

Snorkelers will enjoy the Poipu beaches where a variety of colorful fish and marine life are seen amongst the coral reefs. You can also arrange snorkeling and scuba diving adventure tours at offshore sites where you will see more amazing sea creatures.

Marine Life Attractions Off Kauai’s South Shore

Spinner dolphins are commonly seen in south shore waters, leaping above the surface and doing their acrobatic flips and spins. During the winter months humpback whales are often seen passing by offshore. When a 40-ton whale breaches up from the water and lands with a thunderous splash it is a sight to behold!

Other marine life commonly seen in this area include honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) as well as Hawaiian monk seals. The monk seals often haul up onto south shore beaches to rest, and when this happens all beach visitors are required to stay 150 feet away to ensure the protection of these endangered marine mammals.

South Shore Botanical Gardens

Another south shore attraction is the McBryde Garden in scenic Lawai Valley which extends down to the southern shore. Plant lovers will be astounded by the flora at the 259-acre botanical garden which features not only an extensive collection of native and Polynesian-introduced species integral to Hawaiian culture, but also an extensive array of palms, orchids, and other plants from tropical regions all around the world.

Nearby is the equally impressive Allerton Garden which is smaller than McBryde though also quite sophisticated in its approach. Allerton botanical garden is home to the impressive Moreton Fig trees seen in the Jurassic Park movie. Both of the Allerton and McBryde botanical gardens can be accessed though the South Shore Visitor Center in Poipu. Guided as well as unguided tours are available.

Just a few miles west of Poipu you can take a self-guided tour of a working coffee plantation at Kauai Coffee Plantation and Visitor Center. See how the coffee is grown and processed, sip some fresh-brewed coffee and browse the gift shop.

Golf On Kauai’s South Shore

South shore golfers will enjoy the Kiahuna Golf Club which has recently been renovated with improved greens and added yardage. The course also incorporates important archaeological sites as well as ponds and a stream. Stop by Joe’s on the Green afterwards for some great food.

The Poipu Bay Golf Course offers oceanside holes with picturesque views of the sea and mountains. This beautiful course has hosted PGA events and follows a gently rolling terrain on the scenic southern shore. Another south side golfing option is the 9-hole Kukuiolono Golf Course which is set atop a hill in Kalaheo and offers scenic views of Kauai’s southwest shore.
