Snorkeling, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Surfing and More!
Kauai has some of the world’s finest beaches and plenty of fun water activities to enjoy. From ocean adventures in sailing catamarans to see fish, dolphins, whales and remote coastlines, to surfing, stand up paddling, kayaking and river boat trips, Kauai has lots to offer!
Snorkel among myriad tropical fish in a pristine cove, try surfing or stand up paddling, or go on a humpback whale watching tour. Sailing, kayaking, body boarding and scuba diving are also options. Whatever ocean activity you choose make sure to consider the ocean conditions on the day of your activity. (See Kauai Ocean Safety Tips)
From sunset sails to riverboat cruises or whale watching, Kauai offers many ocean-going adventures including a variety of luxurious sailboats and power boats. Sail the placid waters of the north shore’s scenic Hanalei Bay on a summer evening or take a cocktail cruise offshore of Poipu Resort on the south side.
Whale Watching and Snorkeling Tours – Excursions along the famed Na Pali Coast leave primarily from the west shore with a fewer number of generally smaller vessels making the trip from the north shore. The humpback whales are seen in Hawaiian waters only during the winter months, though summer provides some amazing snorkeling opportunities with spectacular Na Pali Coast views and frequent spinner dolphin sightings.
Sport Fishing – Kauai offers some remarkable sport fishing including half-day or full-day exclusive charters going after the famed big game fish. Few experiences are as thrilling as getting a big one to strike and then trying to reel it in for the catch.
River Boat Trips, Wakeboarding and Water Skiing – For a memorable river adventure on the east side visit the famed Fern Grotto up the Wailua River. Wakeboarding and waterskiing are also popular Wailua River activities as well as kayaking.
Body Boarding – Body boarding is a favorite water activity of locals as well as visitors. On the south side check out Poipu Beach, or if you are in Lihue try Kalapaki Beach which is relatively well-protected from the open ocean with equipment rentals right on the beach.
Kayaking – Numerous companies rent kayaks on Kauai and also lead guided tours, which is recommended for safety reasons. For example you can kayak from the north shore along the famed Na Pali coastline all the way down to Polihale Beach. Or just kayak along the shore of Hanalei Bay and up the meandering Hanalei River.
On Kauai’s east side kayakers can explore the wildlife refuge along the Huleia River (which can only be seen by kayak), or paddle the waters of the expansive Wailua river.
Scuba Diving – Scuba diving on Kauai can be spectacular with the best spots located offshore and reached by dive boats. The best place to dive depends upon ocean conditions and guided tours ensure you visit the proper areas on any given day.
Near Poipu on the south shore is Caverns known for its lava tubes and archways. Tunnels (Makua) Beach on the north shore is one of the best shoreline diving sites during the summer months when the ocean is generally very calm. Both of these spots are known for their vibrant and plenteous marine life. During the summer months you can also take a boat from Kauai to nearby Niihau Island to visit some spectacular diving areas.
Water Safety – The winter months bring larger waves and rougher surf on the north shore, which may be fun for experienced surfers but snorkelers will prefer more protected areas on the south shore. However in the summer just the opposite may be true with the north shore beaches being very calm and perfect for snorkeling while the south shore may have waves that are fun for bodyboarding and surfing.
Guided tours are recommended to ensure your safety. If you are on your own make sure and always check with the lifeguards, and be well-prepared for whatever ocean activity you choose.
