Volcanoes and Coffee Farms Await Hawaii Island Visitors

Lava, Pahoehoe, Big Island

If you are a Kauai resident or visiting the island for two or three weeks, one of the most exciting and fun off-island visits you can take is a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii to see the erupting Kilauea Volcano, and much more!

Planning a two or three day trip to the Big Island will allow you to take in some amazing and unforgettable sights such as the ribbons of red hot lava flowing down Kilauea Volcano and then pouring into the sea.

The Big Island also has spectacular waterfalls, many important Hawaiian cultural sites and historic buildings in Kona and Hilo towns. In Kona you can take a coffee farm tour and taste the famous Kona Coffee.

Mauna Kea Volcano  – Astronomy and Snowboarding!

If you are really adventurous you can drive to the summit of Mauna Kea Volcano at nearly 14,000 feet above sea level to see the consortium of world-class astronomical observatories. A Visitor Center along the road to the top allows opportunities for stargazing.

During winter the snow-capped summit of Mauna Kea is the playground of skiers and snowboarders who use their cars for the ride back up the hill.

Kilauea Volcano Provides Unforgettable Sights

At the summit of Kilauea Volcano you will see steaming cauldrons and huge, steep-walled craters. You can also walk through a huge, dark and dripping lava tube and hike right down into a massive summit crater.

Enjoy a meal at the rustic and historic Volcano House Hotel and Restaurant which sits atop the rim of Halemaumau Crater – never was there a more amazing view from a dining table! Following along Chain of Craters Road from the summit will lead you to a petroglyph field containing hundreds of images carved by Hawaiians in ancient times.

Near the Big Island coastline you can view the red-hot lava flows from a distance as the molten rock makes its way to the ocean. When the lava hits the water it explodes in cataclysms of steam and gases sending up huge clouds. These explosions also create the sand for nearby black sand beaches.

Annual Big Island Events

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival takes place in and around Kona Town every November to celebrate the Kona coffee harvest season. This ten-day festival includes coffee tastings, entertainment, parades, Kona coffee farm tours, and even a coffee-picking contest.

Another popular Big Island event is the Ironman Word Championship triathlon that takes place every October and draws athletes from all around the world.

Hawaii’s premier hula festival is the Merrie Monarch Festival which takes place every April in Hilo to honor the legacy of King Kalakaua. The week-long hula festival also includes a crafts fair and grand parade.

Big Island Beaches and Parks

Not far from Kona is the crescent-shaped and palm-lined Hapuna Beach, one of Hawaii’s most lovely white sand beaches. Another interesting Big Island beach is Punaluu Beach, known for its fine black sand. Punaluu is also a great place to see Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Along the Kona coast near Kona Coffee Country is Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park, a restored sacred Hawaiian site was a place of refuge in ancient times.

Flying to the Big Island

Flying to the Big Island from Kauai may take a couple of hours in all, including switching planes in Honolulu, or at least stopping there. The actual flying time will likely be less than one hour. Exploring the Big Island of Hawaii can be a great side trip during a Kauai vacation, and also a nice vacation for Kauai residents.
