Enjoying the Garden Island on a Budget

Fortunately some of Kauai’s best activities and adventures cost nothing at all. From nature hikes to whale watching there are ways to save money during your Kauai vacation while still enjoying the best the island has to offer.

Lumahai Beach on Kauai’s north shore.

Beaches – A visit to the beach may include an assortment of water activities from snorkeling to surfing and stand up paddling, though many consider the ultimate experience just relaxing on the golden sands and listening to the sounds of the surf with an occasional dip in the water to cool off. Kauai is ringed with wonderful beaches so your choices are myriad. Choose a lifeguarded beach like Hanalei Bay or Lydgate Beach Park to ensure your safety. See Kauai Ocean Safety Tips.

Waterfalls – On the east shore you can see two spectacular waterfalls, Wailua Falls and Opaekaa Falls. On the north shore you can see at least one large waterfall on the mountains above Hanalei town, and many more if there have been recent rains. More waterfalls can be seen along the mountain peaks as you drive out to the end of the road on the north shore, and from there you can hike to Hanakapiai Falls along the Na Pali Coast. Some remarkable waterfall viewing can also be seen in Waimea Canyon on the west side.

Hiking – Plenty of amazing hiking opportunities await you on the Garden Island. From Kokee State Park and Waimea Canyon on the west side to the lush north shore and the Na Pali Coast. From the end of the road on the north shore there is a great day hike to Hanakapiai Valley.

The east side’s Sleeping Giant hike provides spectacular views from the top. Avid hikers will enjoy bird watching and breathtaking vistas from the 45 miles of trails in Kokee State Park where you can choose from Na Pali Coast views or venture into Waimea Canyon.

Historic Attractions – Check out Kilauea Lighthouse on the north shore to see the historic structure as well as a plethora of native bird species. Spouting Horn on the south shore can be an exciting stop. Nearby are the McBryde and Allerton botanical gardens, and though the full tours cost money, there is a large area near the visitor center that you can view for free.

Next head over to the Kauai Coffee Company visitor center in Eleʻele which offers a free self-guided tour to learn about coffee growing, processing and roasting as well as free coffee tasting.

These are just a few of the many enjoyable activities on Kauai that will cost you no money at all. For many the fondest memories of their Kauai vacation will be seeing the sunset over the ocean or a colorful tropical fish swimming amidst the coral reef enjoying time with their friends and family on the Garden Island!
