Tahiti Fete Community Paddling Classic
Every year the Hanalei Canoe Club has a fundraiser called Tahiti Fete. This really fun community event is a quarter mile six person outrigger canoe regatta that is open to experienced and non-experienced paddlers alike. Outrigger canoe racing is part of the Polynesian heritage and is an integral part of the Hawaiian culture.
Tahiti Fete is not just for the residents and businesses of the North Shore on Kauai. It is intended to unite everyone on the island of Kauai, even the tourists who may never have had the opportunity to paddle in an outrigger canoe.
This year’s event took place Saturday, July 7th on Hanalei Bay. The weather was perfect and the bay was beautiful. There were various booths with crafts, food, and other vendors.
Coldwell Banker Bali Hai Realty sponsored a canoe and our team participated in the Novice B Mixed Crew. With only two experienced paddlers in our canoe, we came in second in our heat which is quite the accomplishment! Our crew members, Lisa Downer, Mandy Dye, Ruth Marvin, Paul Pacuilla and Debi Rickert were steered by Mandy’s husband and Hanalei Canoe Club Member Rick. And we send out a big mahalo to Christopher Ordonez for being our personal photographer for this event.
